An economist with the U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve, examines possible reasons for the growing wrldwide balance-of-payments deficit, including the possibility that funds generated by illicit drug traffic may be involved. Leroy O. Laney is assistant vice-president and senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, which originally printed this article in its Economic Review under the title "The Case of the World's Missing Money". Previously, Dr. Laney was an international economist with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and a staff economit with the President's Council of Economic Advisers. The views expressed here are those of the author and do not necessesarily reflect the positions of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas or the Federal Reserve System.
