Isi artikel
Dr. Irving Friedman, professor in residence at the World Bank, brings the wisdom gained from years of practical experience to bear in proposing a new approach for containing inflation. The repeated failures of earlier efforts to subdue this threat to world order have been due, he believes, to neglect of its social and political causes. A native of New York, where he obtained his doctorate from Columbia University in 1940, Professor Friedman began his career as an assistant in trade affairs to the Government of India, then worked during World War II in Chungking for the U.S. embassy and on special U.S. missions to India and Egypt. In this period, he was active in the international discussions that led to the formation of the Bank and of the International Monetary Fund, which he joined in 1946. He moved to the Bank as economic advisor to the president in 1964 and became resident professor in 1971. He has traveled to most of the IMF member nations, lectured widely, and authored many articles and books including Inflation: A Worldwide Disaster (1973).
