Isi artikelProfessor Milton Friedman, the Chicago monetarist much admired by U.S. conservatives, caused a stir in economic circles early in 1974 when, after a visit to Brazil, hepraised that nation's efforts to alleviate the effects of inflation through a system of financial indexation. Such is the professor's reputation that his remarks instantly drew reaction-both favorable and unfavorable-from an inflation-wracked world. He explains concisely here why not a solution in itself, is the best course of economic action to meet current inflationary conditions. Widely respected as one of the most influential economist of modern times, Dr. Friedman was born in New York in 1912 to immigrant parents from Austria-Hungary. He won his doctorate from Columbia University in 1946 and began his long association with the University of Chicago, which was to become identified with the monetary theory that he developed. In 1963 he published-with Anna Jacobson Schwartz-the classic study A Monetary History of United States, 1867-1960, and in 1967 he as honored with the presidency of the American Economic Association.
