Isi artikelFor years now, payments of official development aid by the industrialized nations have been declining. This trend has become more acute since 1994. In 1996, for example, total ODA payments (i.e. Official Development Assistance as defined by the OECD's Development Assistance Committee) of the DAC countries were 4% less in real terms than in prior year, which itself was 9.3% down on the 1994 figure. This development has been particularly dramatic in th United States. The share of GNP taken by ODA payments is now 0.10% in the USA, the lowest it has been since 1950. Japan, too, has drastically cut its aid payments: in 1996, it did so by 25% (in real terms) compared with the prior year, and further cuts are planned. In 1995, due to the revaluation of German mark, German ODA payments fell by 5.1% (in real U.S. dollar terms) compared with the prior year (data taken from OECD News Release, 11.6.1996 and 19.5.1997; FAZ, 14.8.1997)
