Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, particularly those that are resistant to methicillin and all available ß-lactam antibiotics — the so-called methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections — have been declared a public health imperative. A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 estimated that 18,650 persons in the United States died from invasive MRSA infections in 2005.
