he aim of the following deliberations is to give a general overview of the economic and social effects of structural adjustment policy. Proceeding from the concept of "traditional" structural adjustment programmes, the expectations (theory) will be compared with practical experience of structural adjustment policy action packages (practice). Despite the complexity of the structural adjustment programmes (SAP) and the very different experiences in different countries, an attempt will be made to formulate general statements on the concept and effect of the SAPs. In this context, a great degree of abstraction, summary and generalisation will be unavoidable.
