Up to the present time (6 January 1998), the financial crisis in Southeast Asia which erupted in the summer of 1997 has remained one of the dominant topics of the economics pages. It is not yet over. And attemts to elucidate its causes, to understand the dynamics of the process, to assess its consequences both for the countries affected and for the global economy as a whole, and to draw conclusions for international monetary policy, have not yet led to in any generally accepted results. Still less can there be any talk of academic explanation, as the academic debate hasonly just begun. These potentially significant topics can be grouped into six areas, which can be allocated to the following issues.
