Isi artikelThe International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo in September 1994 drew fresh attention to the debate on population growth and family plannng. Evaluating the effects of rapid population growth is still an area of political and academic dispute; however, it is increasingly becoming recognised that, under the economic, social, and geographical conditions prevailing in the developing countries at present and for the foreseeable future, rapid population growth is a negative factor. This is also evident in the official evaluations drawn up by governments in the developing countries. Since the early 80s, assesments of the eonomic and social effects of population growth have become markedly more negative.
