Isi artikelPakistan has been following an agenda of economic reform encompassing a broad range of structural adjustment policies (SAP) since 1987-88. These policies have an adverse impact on the pace of economic growth and are a cause of higher povertyand inequality in the country (see Bengali and Ahmed (2002), Kemal (2003)). The impact of structural adjustment programme on total factor productivity is generally ignored. While the popular belief is that SAP results in low growth in factor inputs, which causes the low economic growth. This paper argues that decline in the growth of total factor productivity is the main cause of low economic growth. The present papaer is the first attempt in Pakistan to establish the link between structural adjustment policies and total factor productivity and to quantify the impact of these policies on total factor productivity over the time.
