Isi artikel
The Churches in Indonesia's eastern province of Papua have been involved and are still being involved, in many different ways, in the struggle for human rights. The Church's involvement in the realization of human rights should be based on theological grounds. This article elaborates the Roman Catholic theological perspective, as proclaimed through her Social doctrine, on the Church's involvement for human rights. Her understanding on human rights is derived from a biblical understanding of human beings. The Church believes that human rights is derived from a biblical understanding of human dignity. The dignity of the person is manifested in all its radiance when the person's origin and destiny are considered: created by God in his image and likeness as well as redeemed by the most precious blood of Christ. Each person is called to be a 'child in the Son' and a living temple of the Spirit, destined for the eternal life of blessed communion with God. It is God who is the source and foundation of human dignity. Due to the transcendental dimension, the human person can never be sacrificed to national or international political interests, whatever those interests may be ". All institutions are established for the sake of human beings. Respect for human beings is and should be the main criteria and essential element in social structures, because society exists for human beings. Therefore, every secular institution should protect and promote human dignity and cosequently, human rights. Unconditional respect for each one's indivisible and inalienable rights is the necessary condition for lasting peace and development.
