A freshwater cyanobacterium, Oscilllatoria sp., produced an extracellular pink pigment associated with cell growth. The partially purified pigment was composed of several lipoproteins with molecular sizes approximately 10-23 kDa. The pigment fraction could emulsify several specified hydrophobic compounds comparable to Triton X-100. In practical application, the pigmnet fraction may therefore be useful as biomulsifier.
