Isi artikelVatican II is a new concept in the history of councils. Its novelty is partly responsible for the mixed reaction it generated in the subsequent decades. Those perceptive Christians among bishops and theologians who were sensitive enough to recognize that the Church was pregnant with a council prepared themselves for the new arrival, assisted at its birth, and strove to foster its postnatal growth. Their names are well-known. Equally noted are the names of a minority who were shocked at the news of the impending council, tried to abort it even before its birth, but in failing to do so, tried to eliminate the newborn as a monstrous mongrel. The council's postnatal growth is stunted by these lethal attempts on its life.
