The idea, however, is by no means new. The parable was used by A. Jonsen as an exercise in clinical cases studies to demonstrate that there are inevitable limits to the possibilities and capacities of contemporary medicine. Let us leave aside the application of the parable to situations which belong to the realm of the purely fantastic, and introduce it instead into a seminar on medical ethics for students or for young professionals of medicine and nursing.
