Fortunately, the time allotted calls for a simplified approach and I will focus my observations on the political-social dimension of health as it affects infectious diseases. Let me start by expressing my appreciation to His Eminence Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, President of the Pontifical Council on for Health Care Workers, for his kind invitation to address this august assembly and for including the socio-political aspects of infectious diseases in this program on the pastoral response of the Church to such grave and threatening health-related emergencies.
