The little we know of our immune system does not allowe a precise description of the ways by which the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) enters and destroys it. Our knowledge illuminates only parts of the scenario, and we do not know how to fit these different parts into a whole picture. The scenario which I describe here is incomplete and must be full of errors.
