The Benteng Chinese community in Tangerang is a community which still lives in strict adherence to Confucian teachings. The name Cina Benteng (The Chinese of the Fortress) was given by the surrounding community to the Chinese ethnic group living in Tangerang, while the word Benteng actually refers to the remnants of a historical structure, namely a fortress built by the Dutch Colonial Government. The Chinese came to Tangerang fleeing a massacre of the Chinese by the Dutch in Batavia during the colonial era in 1740, causing the death of approximately 10,000 innocent people. Some of them fled to Tangerang and surrounding areas to save their lives. |
