Professor Bergstrom pointed out that at a bioethical meeting held in Canada the preceding spring emphasis had been placed on the need to establish ethics committees wherever research was being conducted on human beings. Informed consent had also been insisted upon for clinical trials, and it was felt that some form of consempation must be instituted for certain cases in which there was unvoidable harm to patients.
