His baptismal name was Erminio Filippo. His mother died when he was three, and his father, when he was ten. In Pavia he completed studies in medicine and surgery. In Pavia he was a member of the Catholic university circle and attended the St. Vincent de Paul lectures. In 1921 he joined the Franciscan Third Order.
