At a recent meeting to discuss cell-based therapies for cardiovascular disease, a colleague asked, "With intracardiac devices being so successful, why would anybody want to put unknown cells into sick hearts?" Although horse-and-buggy drivers probably made similar comments about the first automobiles, the question bears consideration. After injury, myocardial regeneration occurs slowly, if at all.
