The first in this city, founded by pilgrims returning from the Holy Land, was established over eight hundred years ago. The Hospital of Saint John in Thomas Street bore little resemblance to a modern health care institution. Its concerns were rather different. In many cases, during the patient was hardly on the agenda at all. It was a case of caring for those who were beyond curing - what we today would call a hospice.
