Isi artikelSpit on the desert and a flower grows,"That, at least, is the proverb on Earth. On Mars, however, you might hope for asparagus, green beans and turnips if the latest results from Phoniex are to be believed. An analysis carried out by the probe, which landed on May out 25th, suggests the local regolith (the crushed rock that passes for soil on Mars) is slighty alkaline-which such vegetables prefer. That is surprise. The Regolith was expected to be very acid-probably too acid even for crops such as peanuts, potatoes and carrots that lke their soils with low pH.
