Its goal is to contribute to the physical and mental well-being of men and women, to reduce morbidity and mortality, to reduce pain and suffering, and to increase the ability of men and women to lead useful and productive lives. Such research must be purposeful and innovative. It must have as its goal to meet significant medical needs and to serve the individual patient.
