Abstract
By the time this edition of Postscript is published, the Golongan Karya
B (Golkar) Party will already have a new chairperson (or not). The
"Banyan tree" party is slated to have its congress in Bali on
December 15 - 20, to appoint its new chairperson. The Golkar Party was
initially established as an organization called the Joint Secretariat of
Golongan Karya (Sekber Golkar) on October 20, 1964. In 1971, the
organization changed its name to Golongan Karya (Golkar) and has
become a single majority victor in six general elections between 1971
and 1997. Golkar has become the backbone of the New Order
government. On March 1999, Golkar officially declared itself as a political
party in order to comply with the new Political Party Law.' Despite strong
criticism in 1999, the party has managed to come back and win the
support of the public by being the victor in the 2004 legislative election.
