The quadrupling of oil prices over the past five years has had a significant impact on public finances across East Asia. Government budgets in many economies are under pressure, particularly when saddled with substantal energy subsidies. Only in the few countries that are net energy exporters would one expect to see a benefit from higher oil prices.
