But as they strolled down New York City ritzy Madison Avenue one afternoon in the mid-1970s, the couple noticed in a gallery window a painting that they found curiously beautiful. It was an image of White Tara, a female Buddhist deity with seven eyes. "We didn't know if it was Chinese, Tibetan or something else; we didn't know if it was Chinese, Tibetan or something else; we didn't know anything," says Shelly.
