Isi artikelThis study investigated word recognition procedures among Japanese learners of Chinese as a second language (CSL), compared with learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL). Specifically the study examined, to what degree the Japanese learners' first language (L1) affect the procedures underlying second language word recognition with respect to the effects of level and place where they study the language. Two groups of Japanese students participated in this study, one group of CSL learners who were studying Chinese at East China Normal University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China, and one group of CFL learners who were undergraduates from the Department of Chinese language and studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Tokyo, Japan. They were asked to finish 3 tasks: 1) word translation task, 2) translation recognition task, and 3) negative priming task. Their reaction times were recorded and analyzed. This research paper includes only the results of the word translation task. The results showed that there was a translation asymmetry between CSL and CFL. The CSL group translated L1-L2 faster than L2-L1, and the CFL group the opposite. No statistical evidence could be found between the two levels of learners within the same language group, but significant differences were found between the groups. CSL learners did both of the translation tasks much faster; CFL learners' performance improved remarkably with increasing fluency, however, their L1-L2 translation was still not as good as CSL learners.
