Isi artikelRecently, there has been a growing frustration in the United States with the workings of democratic instutions and with the character of public life. Back in the early 1960s surveys pollsters asked the public: do you trust the federal government in Washington to do the right thing most of the time? And back in the days when John F. Kennedy was president of the United States, about 75% of the public said yes. They did trust the federal government. When pollsters today ask that very same question, about 18% say yes. Turnout in presidential elections has declined in almost every election has declined in almost every election since 1960 between Bill Clinton and Robert Dole,less than 50% of eligible voters turned out to vote.
