In the EVS-publication The Indivualising Society: Value Change in Europe and North America (Tilburg University Press, 1993), the editors P. Ester, L. Halman and R. de Moor considered indivualization and secularization as the main trends, discovered in analyzing the data of the European Values Study (EVS), covering the surveys of 1981 and 1990-91. Though Europe and North America belong to the same Western cultural tradition, for both processes mentioned striking differences appear. This paper will develop some of these.
