Isi artikelThe exploratory study of competency differences in problem solving of mathematics between students enrolled at distance learning system nad face to face learning system was intended to distinguish students’ different capabilities in solving routine and non-routine problems. In this study the students of Mathematics Education from Universitas Terbuka (UT) were chosen as samples for distance learning and students with similar study program from the Jakarta State University (UNJ) for face t0 face learning. Calculus problems were delivered as routine problems, while the simple proofing problems taken from Number Theory, Geometry, and Real Analysis were delivered as non-routine problems. The results indicate that in solving the routine problems, there were no significant different achievements between students of UT and those of UNJ. However, in solving the non-routine problems there were significant achievements between the two sample groups.
