Isi artikel
This issue of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy examines whether the precautionary principle can be usefully applied to problems in the fields of philosophy of medicine and bioethics. In doing so, authors have explored the definition, justification, applications, and critiques of the precautionary principle, including whether it is one principle or many. The precautionary principle was introduced by people favoring proof of safety to human health and environment before adopting new technologies. They pointed out that new technologies might cause irreparable harm and defended the common sense approach of ‘‘look before you leap.’’ Typically the private sector makes the profits, they argued, leaving it up to the public to face the damaging consequences of too hastily introduced new technologies and to pick up the costs of restoration or repair. Environmentalists claim that if nations had waited for clear proof that acid rain was destroying forests, the forests would have been lost.
