Isi artikelEver since Otto Peters introduced the notion that Distance Education Functions as an ‘industrial model’ of teaching and learning, practitioners and researchers have grappled with the implications of this model as it denotes access and availability of learning opportunities rather than for the individual experience of the leaner. However Open Universities have tried to overcome this contracdition by developing leaner support systems to facilitate and support the learning process. In this context it is important to survey what learners want from the institution rather than to think solely of the provision the institution makes for its distance learners . This study examined the special needs of differently abled learners of IGNOU and responsiveness of the institution in fullfing them. It also compared the level of success (course completion) of learners with disability with general leaners and recommended provisions that could improve the success rate and facilitate the learning of this particular target group. A sample group of differently abled learners were surveyed. Data was culled out from office records. Finally a focus group meeting was held to get to the bottom of the issue.
