Isi artikelThe past decade has seen an explosion of concern with the twin issues of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. These are hotly discussed matters, among the general public as well as among physicians, lawyers, and academics. International practices play a prominent role in this discussion: euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are openly performed in the Netherlands; though they remain in violation of statutory law, a series of lower and supreme court cases has developed guidelines now codified under the 1993 revision of the law, according to physicians who perform these practices will not be prosecuted. State and national surveys in the United States consistently show that a majority of the populace say they favor legalization of these practices, and Derek Humphrey’s Final Exit, a guide to suicide for the terminally ill, has sold over a half-million copies.
