We arrived at the school the same time as the first winter snow was falling. It was a bitterly cold day with the outside temperature touching –10°C. Inside school, it was not much warmer. ‘We don’t put the heating on until later in the winter because we haven’t enough coal to get through – we wait until it gets really cold!’, the deputy principal told me with a wry smile pulling on her overcoat and adding, ‘anyway – this isn’t cold – cold is when the ink freezes!’
