There is a need to challenge current assumptions about the conditions and outcomes for professionals who work in human service organisations, such as in education and health. There is also a need to explore the possible impact of the contemporary pressures for continuous improvement, accountability for outcomes, and, especially, the provision of high quality service within severe resource constraints, on those who provide the service. Too frequently, in matters of service, the focus tends to be on meeting the needs and expectations of customers or clients (e.g. students and/or parents) as defined by national policies, while ignoring the possible implications for those who provide the service (e.g. teachers).
