Isi artikelEducation is often regarded as the most critical institution in a democracy. It potentially plays a fundamental role in ensuring social mobility by leveling the playing field. And social mobility ensures that democracy works by facilitating movement across social classes. If, on the other hand, an education system reproduces poverty and wealth across generations, it creates a two-tiered society, where those in positions of power remainso and those at the bottom of the social scale lose hope of ever changing their lives. Such an education system would threaten the tenets of a democratic society.
