The normal concerns of this journal seem lightweight compared with the far-reaching consequences of 11 September. The murderous demolition of the Twin Towers; the world’s most powerful president launching a ’crusade’ against enemies yet to be named; the world plunged into a war which some US politicians threaten may last 50 years; widespread fears of biological and nuclear attacks. All this has, perforce, generated new thinking. Although the events in New York cannot be justified, they have to be understood. There is discussion everywhere, as the young (and not so young) surge forward to question and debate - an unexpected education.
