Casuistry is not a new phenomenon in the history of ethics. On the contrary, it has a long and rich tradition in its own right. The method of case study that characterizes applied ethics today may be understood as the revival of a previous practice, although this is often not realized. The present paper intends to outline the development of casuistry in the past in order to understand better the essence of moral thinking.
