The re-election of ’New Labour’ in Britain poses serious challenges for school improvement. We are inevitably affected by the major policy shifts surrounding public services. Where do we stand, as teachers, education managers and academics concerned with school improvement, and how might we hope to intervene? It is not the role of this journal to determine collective answers to these questions, but neither can it sidestep the issues. Hopefully it will make a contribution by helping those engaged in school improvement to consider the issues reflectively and thus provide a foundation for professional clarity.
