Of the two basic approaches in ethics, ethics of virtue and ethics of duty, the first, which is the Greek, takes the view that what is best for human beings is happiness (eudaimonia), while the second, which is adopted by Immanuel Kant (and other German philosophers up to the present century), claims that eudemonism undermines the essence of morality. This paper presents Robert Spaemann's attempts to unite the two approaches. It starts with the presentation of the history of ethics from the Greek, the ethics of virtue eudemonistic, to Kantian ethics, the ethics of duty. It ends with investigating the question of how ethic is eudemonistic and why it must be so.
