There is much interest in the performance of schools, with a reliance on external evaluation through test and examination results and inspections. School improvement is often restricted to seeking a rise in these quantitative measures. In contrast, we contend that whilst these measures can provide indicators for a school to improve on its current performance, they rarely offer a deep understanding of how to create the optimum conditions for students to make progress. This study considers students as the ’customers’ of the educational ’product’, and pursues a mechanism whereby the children can evaluate how they leam best and collaborate with their teachers in a school which has evolved an inquiring culture. The Literature Review cites research which has involved students in sharing their perceptions of their learning experiences. A small-scale Pilot Research Study, involving approximately 10% of a school population, was carried out to determine the willingness and capability of students to articulate their perceptions of what are the important factors in the classroom that impact on their learning. Student variables of age, ability, gender and level of engagement are considered. From the positive outcomes of this study, the school is planning an Action Research Project over a four-year period.
