This language situation seems to be closely related to the language attitude of the people to the national language, Bahasa Indonesia. An antropho-linguistic study has been conducted in three main language areas in Minangkabau to observe the Minangkabau language attitude and its effects to the use of Minangkabau proverbs as a means of teaching moral and cultural values to Minangkabau people. The combination of qualitative and quantitative study, use both questionnaires and a deep interview to the Focus Group Discussion in collecting the data needed. The research shows that, first, code-switching and code-mixing is very common in Minangkabau families and societies. Minangkabau people, especially young generation, has a positive attitude to Bahasa Indonesia. Then, the language attitude contributes to the increasing use of Bahasa Indonesia specially among families of middle to upper classes and those who leave in a heterogonous society in the cities. Third, this language situation very much affects the degree of people’s knowledge and use of Minangkabau proverbs. It is found that one’s educational background has no relation to his or her knowledge and use of the proverbs. And, one’s degree of knowledge of proverbs does not correlate to the degree of the use of the proverbs; young people’s and teenagers’ knowledge and use of proverbs is lower than that of the old; those leaving in the village with relatively homogonous environment know and use more proverbs than those leaving in the cities in heterogonous societies. From the research, it has been formulated an ideal language model for Minangkabau people if they want to maintain the existence of Minangkabau language and their cultural identity.
