Isi artikel
The paper aims to discuss referential system in the Sasak speech style which is mostly determined by the social hierarchies. Speech style and its use are indicated in the system of reference to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons, which systematically characterizes Sasak dyads. In the case of a 1st person referent, there is no lexical item used to mark status, because the social system does not allow for the expression of respect for the 1st person referent. With the 2nd person referent, however, the lexical choice depends on the status of the interlocutors. In the 3rd person referent system, the choice of the pronoun of address depends on the status of the addressee and of the 3rd person. It is worth noting that in Sasak daily social encounters, respect is indicated by the lexical choice.
