The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the perceptions among students and lecturers on the use of ‘aku’ and ‘saya’ in their daily interactions. According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (1999), the use of ‘aku’ and ‘saya’ differs in manners. The first is used to illustrate intimate relationship and the second is used to illustrate formal relationship. Intimate relationship is construed as the same level of relationship, for instance, among friends, whilst formal relationships can be construed as the ones among older people and those with higher career positions. It is expected that we use ‘saya’ as the pronominal pronoun to refer to ourselves when we talk to those who are older, or in any formal situations/relationships. However, there has been a new tendency these days found in media and our daily life that greater number of people demonstrate the use of ‘aku’ more often, without showing concern to whom they speak, or in what kinds of situations. This paper explores lecturers’ and students’ point of views concerning the use of ‘aku’ and ‘saya’. An in-depth research will be carried out in the attempt to reveal the actual perceptions among lecturers and students on the concept of ‘aku’ and ‘saya’, together with their knowledge dan experiences on using ‘aku’ and ‘saya’. The results of the research indicates that the teachers perceptions and the students’ concerning the use of ‘aku’ and ‘saya’ are different. The differences are assumed to be aroused from the family influencing the concepts. The different concepts make the students feel that they are still accepted by their older generation when using ‘aku’ instead of ‘saya’. The media, which is said to have influenced the students, proved not to have a lot of influences to the students although the teachers have different opinions. Finally, both the teachers and students agree on one thing that the differences between ‘aku’ and ‘saya’ are still relevant for the time being. This research should provide greater insight for students, lecturers, and the institutions into the betterment of soft skills of our students, and a stimulating contribution for the lecturers and the institutions on what guides should be provided for their students in the near future.
