Isi artikelThis paper discusses voice construction types and their properties in the Austronesian languages of Flores, Indonesia. We will show that these languages are mainly of isolating type where Austronesian verbal voice morphology has been lost. However, the the loss of verbal voice morphology is not followed by a (total) loss of a voice system. Different kinds of voice (active voice, passive voice, undergoer voice, middle voice, (anti)causative, and dative shift) are attested in Flores languages. The distinctions are mainly constructionally or analytically coded. Voice is part of widespread constructional systems in these languages. The loss of verbal morphology in Lamaholot and Manggarai is compensated for by the development of bound pronominal forms that often constitute part of voice coding. Our preliminary research has revealed the subtlety and richness of the meaning contrasts encoded by constructionally-coded voice distinctions in these languages.
