Isi artikel
The purpose of this paper is to raise our awareness that prior to the “invasion” of the Northern Territory of Australia by the Europeans, the Macassans (Makassar) trepangers of South Sulawesi had been coming each year to the Northern Territory coastline (called Marege) for many generations. The Abariginal languages of the Northern Territory coast can teach us a great deal. Where borrowings from Macassarese language have been extensive we can deduce that there was considerable interaction with the trepangers. These loanwards had introduced Aboriginal people to the outside world and to people who were more advanced and more innovative in so many aspects than they were particularly in the world of trepang business and navigation. The changes of phonological system that have been found are not quite distinctive from the L1 source. This may due to the influence of English language from which the Aborigins have adopted substantial numbers of words.
