Isi artikel This paper examines the reasons for the members of Indonesian Islamic Da’wah Association (IIDA) community, Malang, East Java, Indonesia to codeswitch between Indonesian, Javanese and Arabic when they conduct musyawarah. Situational and Metaphorical perspective (Blom & Gumperz, 1972, 1982) are used to interpret the reasons of codeswitching. This study shows that the interlocutor’s social status and hierarchy are important points to consider when the participants think about using Javanese. Codeswitching is used not only as a tool of a communicative strategy, but also as a means of obtaining God’s blessing. While it is true that in using Indonesian and Javanese, the participants have to consider the interlocutor’s social status; however, it is not really the case in Arabic. Arabic is used as a neutral language to serve the language of law.
