Isi artikel
When Norma Redfearn became headteacher at West Walker Primary in 1986, despair hung over the community like a toxic cloud. This was a neighbourhood that had had the lifeblood ripped out of it during the Thatcher years. Where once the thunderous march of 12,000 men making their way to the Swann Hunter shipbuilding yards filled the morning air, a heavy silence descended in the early ’80’s when the yards were closed. Almost overnight, the hopefulness of the people was wiped out. They felt they were cut off from society and that their futures had been cancelled.
