Many projects and departments have changed title and designation from Language and multicultural Development to Ethnic Minority and Travellers Achievement Grant (EMTAG) posts. In general though, the brief of such work has become as broad as it is tall and much more is involved in the ever increasing complexity of school institutions and their ethnic composition. Raising attainment is now a national issue and not an exclusively ethnic minority group target. The last call in Section 11 projects was for ’Raising Achievement’ projects, often targeting African-Caribbean pupils, and it is to such a project and this named target group that my arguments, findings and recommendations mainly refer.
