Isi artikelDaemona is thiety-years old, a highly successful, much envied stockbroker trading in short-term securities, doing well in the world. She is, as these matters go in her circles, a good friend, daughter, and citizen, reliable in meeting her ordinary obligations. More than that, she is a devout Methodist who volunteers to visit the infirm and elderly. But despite her convictions, indeed against them, she makes a tidy sum in commissions from luring her Methodists to buy highly speculative, near worthless junk bonds. Her clients tend to be averse to risk; but she falsely assures them that their funds are insured against any losses. Her chicanery is not impulsive; it is astutely focused: she does not attempt the same maneuvers with less gullible clients. She believes that what she is doing is wrong, certainly shameful. She is not supporting an aged father or sending her daughter to an excellent private school, nor is she trying to prove that women can be as ruthless as men. She would prefer to indulge her wxpensive tastes and to move in less expensive circles by other means. While she regrets that this seems the easiest road to success, she is likely-and knows that she is likely-to continue her habits without justifying them by larger considerations. Daemona endures her regret, perhaps even sometimes her pangs of guilt, in much the same way that she might endure a hangover, vowing moderation next time. Daemona is dispositionally akratic if anyone is. Hers is a dispositional forward-looking akrasia of greed. The akrasia from which she suffers is widespread; she lives in a world organized around economic consumptions; her worth and self-worth are at least in part measured by her spending power.
