Carson Strong makes several claims in his article (Strong, 2000). Some turn on an interpretation of ‘specified principlism’. Under this label he bands together a number of writers in and out of bioethics who have expressed very different views. The general label was created by David DeGrazia, and not all of those treated by Strong would subscribe to the views he situates under this label. Nonetheless, Strong is generally fair in his representation of the viewpoints of these writers, and I will not try to tediously distinguish them or engage in conceptual analysis of his first topic, “What is Specified Principlism?”
